Cox.net to Yahoo.com Conversion Notes
Computer Club members with @cox.net email addresses should by now have been notified that Cox is discontinuing email service. All @cox.net email accounts are being migrated to Yahoo.com. Your @cox.net email address will not change, but there are some setup steups needed to access your account via Yahoo.com. You will receive an email from Yahoo that has the following notice: Welcome to
Yahoo Mail! Be aware, once your @cox.net account has been migrated, client-side email programs such as Outlook, Windows Mail, Thunderbird, OE Classic and Mac Mail will no longer receive any emails to that @cox.net email until you perform the conversion steps. If you were using your web browser to read your Cox.net emails, you will see a page advising that "Your account has been moved to Yahoo mail." If you wait even a day or two, be prepared for quite a flood of emails to deal with after you finish the conversion. CAUTION!!! Scammers have been sending fake emails that pretend to be the conversion notice. They are trying to steal your Cox.net login credentials to use in identity theft and spamming. Only respond to an email from Yahoo.com that likes like the one above. Step 1 above is fairly easy except that the hyperlink provided in Yahoo's email gets a "Page not found" error. Use https://mail.yahoo.com instead. Once there, look for the head icon to the upper right. Click that to open a popup menu and then click "+ Add or manage accounts". Enter your @cox.net email address and follow the steps in Step 1 above. That will get your @cox.net activated on Yahoo.com. You will be able to view your @cox.net email's inbox via your web browser. Make sure you record the new password. Step 2 above is causing difficulty for many people who use client-side email programs. Yahoo mail requires that you generate an "App password" to use with your email client and also that you change the server names in your client's settings for that @cox.net account. The details and directions can be found in this Yahoo Help article: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN36637.html ALERT!! I'm advised that Mac Mail users may have difficulty finding the "manual configuration" option needed to configure the Yahoo mail server names. If so, you can use your web browser to access your inbox at https://mail.yahoo.com. Once again, make sure you record the newly generated App password. You will use it in your email client. You will use the password you set up in Step 1 to access your Inbox via the Yahoo web browser interface. If you had your @cox.net account set up to forward all incoming emails to another account, on Yahoo you will have to upgrade to Yahoo+ and then follow the steps in this Yahoo Help article: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/auto-forwarding-address-sln29133.html The Computer Club's Tuesday Repair SIG can also offer help. It meets in the club classroom at the Pinnacle; doors open at 12:30 PM. Tom Burt Last modified: June 15, 2024 |
